Meander and Pearling of Single-Curvature Bilayer Interfaces

چکیده
The functionalized Cahn-Hilliard (FCH) free energy models interfacial energy in amphiphilic phase separated mixtures. Its minimizers encompass a rich class of morphologies with detailed inner structure, including bilayers, pore networks, pearled pores and micelles. We address the existence and stability of single-curvature bilayer structures in d ≥ 2 space-dimensions in the strong functionalization scaling. The existence problem involves the construction of homoclinic solutions in a perturbation of a 4th-order integrable Hamiltonian system. The linear stability involves an analysis of meander and pearling modes of the 4th-order linearized operator associated to these homoclinic solutions.

Meander and Pearling of Single-Curvature Bilayer Interfaces in the Functionalized Cahn-Hilliard Equation
The functionalized Cahn-Hilliard (FCH) free energy models interfacial energy in amphiphilic phase separated mixtures. We address the existence and linear stability of α-single curvature bilayer structures in d ≥ 2 spacedimensions for a family of gra...
متن کاملExistence, bifurcation, and geometric evolution of quasi-bilayers in the multicomponent functionalized Cahn-Hilliard equation.
Multicomponent bilayer structures arise as the ubiquitous plasma membrane in cellular biology and as blends of amphiphilic copolymers used in electrolyte membranes, drug delivery, and emulsion stabilization within the context of synthetic chemistry. We present the multicomponent functionalized Cahn-Hilliard (mFCH) free energy as a model which allows competition between bilayers with distinct co...
متن کاملStudy of the morphological changes and meander pattern of the Zohre River using satellite images
Erosion and sedimentation that will lead to morphological changes in rivers are found in alluvial rivers. Morphological changes in rivers can cause numerous problems, so studying the shape of alluvial rivers in morphology is very important in morphology science. In this study, morphology changes of the Zohreh River in the Hendijan plain, for a length of about 23 km between latitudes 30´ 49° and...
متن کاملExistence of pearled patterns in the planar functionalized Cahn-Hilliard equation
The functionalized Cahn-Hilliard (FCH) equation supports planar and circular bilayer interfaces as equilibria which may lose their stability through the pearling bifurcation: a periodic, high-frequency, in-plane modulation of the bilayer thickness. In two spatial dimensions we employ spatial dynamics and a center manifold reduction to reduce the FCH equation to an 8th order ODE system. A normal...
متن کاملModeling morphological instabilities in lipid membranes with anchored amphiphilic polymers
Anchoring molecules, like amphiphilic polymers, are able to dynamically regulate membrane morphology. Such molecules insert their hydrophobic groups into the bilayer, generating a local membrane curvature. In order to minimize the elastic energy penalty, a dynamic shape instability may occur, as in the case of the curvature-driven pearling instability or the polymer-induced tubulation of lipid ...
